Name: Kosem Sultan Door: Canon: Magnificent Century: Kosem Canon Point: Ep. 27 Age: 32 Appearance: Here History: Kosem was born Anastasia in Greece where her father was a merchant and educated his daughter well. At some point in her teenage years, she was painted and that portrait made its way to Instanbul. The young prince Ahmed saw it among the gifts his grandmother had presented him and fell in love with her at first sight. When Ahmed ascended the throne and became sultan, his grandmother, Safiye Sultan, arranged to have Anastasia seized and brought as a gift. Her motives were not simply to please her grandson, but also to ensure that she had someone loyal to her that was close to Ahmed, guaranteeing her power. Anastasia was kidnapped, and despite an escape attempt and appeal to a recruit named Iskander, she was brought to Istanbul. Rebellious by nature, Anastasia continued to try to escape, finding secret passages and writing to her family. There, she met Ahmed in his secret garden. She was unaware that he was the sultan, having been told by the other girls in the harem (jealous of her), that the sultan was old, fat and ate the hearts of little girls. Ahmed promised to help her. She was summoned later to stay the night with him and was shocked to see her new friend was the Sultan. Despite herself, she became drawn to Ahmed through the things they shared and his gentle nature. She still attempted to escape, finding several plots and dangers along the way, as well as one attempted murder on her life. On her last attempt, and after sleeping with Ahmed, she decided to stay with him, realizing that she was in love with him. There was a great deal of discontent among the army (known as the Janissaries), due to the machinations of several women in Ahmed's family. Full rebellion broke out when Ahmed and his brother fell ill with smallpox. Anastasia faced the attack on the palace and pleaded with the crowd, talking them down and convincing them to return home. Anastasia made a deal with a sorceress, that in exchange for curing Ahmed, she would walk through fire for the rest of her life and lose those she loved one by one. Anastasia agreed and Ahmed was healed. Because of her efforts to protect the palace and guide the people, she was renamed "Kosem", which means "leader, guiding light." Kosem became Ahmed's favorite, bearing him a son (Mehmed), who was sadly second to another concubine's. There was a custom among the Ottomans that when a sultan ascends the throne, his brothers are killed to ensure there are no rivals. Ahmed had bucked that rule by sparing his brother, Mustafa. However, the law had not been overturned. Kosem faced the possibility of her son being killed. This fear was reinforced when Safiye Sultan made an attempt to overthrow and murder Ahmed, replacing him with Mustafa. Kosem barely escaped with her life, remaining in hiding with Ahmed's sons until his return. Osman's (Ahmed's first son) mother was killed and Kosem adopted him, treating him as her own. Meanwhile, Mustafa was spared and placed under house arrest, kept in complete isolation. This made his mental state deteriorate until he went mad. Kosem had several more children, but feared the law of fratricide, especially as her sons grew. Osman and Mehmed constantly fought and disliked each other, leading Kosem to wonder what would happen when Ahmed died. Sadly, his death came earlier than Kosem expected. Ahmed had been slowly poisoned, which exacerbated an already growing cancer in his stomach. Before he died, he freed Kosem and legally married her (a rare honor for a concubine). She kept Ahmed's death a secret for a day, forging a decree in his name and with his seal that overturned the law of fratricied. This was guaranteed by the councillors and the head priest (the Sheikh ul-Islam), many of whom were in her camp, as she had cultivated power years before. The law stated the oldest and most mature prince would ascend the throne. This being Mustafa rather than Osman. Kosem plotted to put Mustafa on the throne, starting the precedent of other princes being spared, before revealing Mustafa's madness and removing him for Osman. However, Mustafa's mother (Halime) turned on Kosem and locked her sons in the palace, banishing Kosem to the Palace of Tears, where former concubine were forced to live. Learning her sons were slated for execution, and Mustafa's madness having been revealed, Kosem raced to the palace to save them, finding they had been spared by Mustafa's brother in law. With her sons safe, Kosem and the Janissaries removed Mustafa and placed Osman on the throne. Osman was still bitter that Kosem had put Mustafa on the throne first and nearly got him killed. Listening to his tutor, who wanted to control Osman without interference, Osman banished Kosem from the palace. Still, she tried to see that his rule was safe by meeting with his councilors and advising them on his policies. Osman found out and barred Kosem from seeing her children. This further pushed him to listen to his tutor. Meanwhile, Mehmed was lured into a trap, believing that he would be killed by Osman. He escaped the palace and fled to the Janissary camp. Osman raced after him, viewing this as treason and a sign that he meant to rebel. Kosem was warned as well and arrived before the Janissaries and Osman's guards came to blows. She convinced Mehmed to return, having received a promise from Osman that he would not kill innocent princes. Seeing his mother trusting Osman's word, Mehmed followed and returned to the palace. There, he was placed in isolation as Osman debated about what to do. Finally, he was convinced to have a fatwa issued against Mehmed for treason, allowing him to break the new law and kill Mehmed. Kosem was warned that Mehmed was in danger and attempted to reach him through a secret passage she knew, but found it walled up, as Osman realized it was how Mehmed sneaked out. By the time Kosem reached the main doors of the palace, the deed was already done and Mehmed was dead. Kosem was broken by this, but buried her sorrow under bitterness. When Osman visited the tomb of his father and brother and found Kosem there, he tried to justify his actions, blaming her for pushing him to it by her actions. He called her mother, as he always had before, but Kosem interrupted him, telling him she was no longer his mother and he was no longer her son, he would walk his path alone. This is where she is pulled from. Personality: Generous: Kosem is known for her generosity. She set up several charities, collecting notes and requests from the people, always seeing that they were fulfilled. Later, after she is banished (both times), she continues her work and visited the poor district and individual houses. She would share a meal with them and see to their needs. One example happens late at night where she learns the young boy of the family is not able to attend school, as he must work to support his family. Kosem pays off the family's debts and sees to it the boy is educated. Kosem met a young girl during the early days of establishing her charities. Several times, the girl (Meleki) and her mother protected Kosem, first by sheltering her during the rebellion, and then warning her of a plot against her life. Meleki's mother is killed, so Kosem houses the girl in the harem and oversees her education and care. This is similar to the times that Kosem protected and cared for Mustafa, seeing to it that he wasn't killed, even though he had to stay in isolation. She saw to it his mother was able to visit for a time, granting Mustafa and his mother some comfort. Proud: Kosem refuses to bend and accept situations beneath her dignity. When she is younger, this manifests in her refusal to be a concubine and a slave. Several times she attempts to escape, it is only when she falls in love that she finally stays. However, that pride still remains. The few times that Ahmed had other women, Kosem tried to get rid of them, wanting to be the only one in Ahmed's heart. Several times she refuses compromises that could benefit her, turning her nose up at them. She doesn't help Safiye Sultan when she is to be exiled, agreeing with Ahmed's decision and not wanting Safiye to have all of the power and control. She turns down several alliance offers, one coming from Halime, to help her bring down Safiye. She prefers to rely on herself and never bow to another person. Even while banished, Kosem doesn't fully follow the rules and limitations placed on her. She holds several meetings with Osman's councilors, secretly directing the course of the government. She always insists that she's not like the others, whether in exile or in the harem and continually attempts to prove it. Vengeful: Kosem is ruthless and vengeful with those that cross her. When she plans to overthrow Mustafa and learns her sons are going to be killed, she kidnaps Mustafa's sister and holds her hostage, threatning to kill her unless her husband and Halime stopped their plot and released her sons. After her canon point, when Osman is killed because of Halime's machinations, Kosem goes on a murder spree, ordering the death of everyone involved. The Janissaries that overthrew Osman were hacked to pieces, Osman's tutor was stabbed with an ice pick, Mustafa's sister was stabbed through the heart, her husband was beaten and strangled (with the same rope Osman was strangled with), finally Halime was poisoned. Earlier in her life, when her father was held hostage and poisoned by Safiye Sultan, Kosem charged into her room with a torch and threatened her, swearing to take away everything she loved. Kosem fulfilled that promise by first taking her wealth, her power and eventually the life of her son that had been secreted away. She was unforgiving, wanting to repay blood with blood. Insolent: Kosem doesn't abide by decorum or hierarchy, no matter who it is, she speaks her mind. Often this comes as making snarky comments. After the first uprising when Ahmed was sick, Kosem indirectly criticized Safiye for attempting to run away. Safiye warned Kosem that the soldiers would be back, Kosem responded, "Well don't worry, you have plenty of time to run away." She talks back to the senior members of Ahmed's family, challenging them any time they threaten her or insult her. It comes to the point where Mustafa's sister wants to sell Kosem at the slave market for her insolence. Even with Ahmed, Kosem doesn't obey the rules, charging into his rooms whenever she pleases without permission. Eventually, Ahmed tells his servants to just let her do what she wants, as it happens so often. Powers and Abilities: Beyond her intelligence and astute statecraft, she's a mortal woman. Inventory: A secondary outfit: Her green ensemble, Hurrem's ring, the portrait of Ahmed and Kosem that she keeps close. Samples: TDM TL, TDM Thread |
